Castell Deudraeth, opened in 2001, is very different. It has 11 bedrooms, two dining areas, a meeting room and walled garden. Beneath its Grade II listed 19th-century exterior, it is bold and contemporary in style. Bedrooms are furnished with king or queen-size beds, whirlpool baths, real flame gas fires, oak floors with underfloor heating and wide screen TVs with DVDs. The interiors fuse traditional Welsh materials such as slate and oak with cutting edge design featuring unusual finishes such as burnt and fumed oak and acid patinated zinc. It was always part of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’ plan that the Castell would form part of the enchanting Portmeirion village, and there is nothing quite like it in Wales. Quiet woods surround the castle but the views over the bay are stunning.
