Corfe Castle

One of Britain’s most impressive ruins, Corfe Castle controlled the gateway through the Purbeck Hills and has been an important stronghold since the days of William the Conqueror. Its dramatic history stretches back to the murder of 18-yr old Edward the Martyr in 978. The castle was finally wrecked by Cromwell’s troops in 1646. Several Norman and early English features remain. Stone from the castle has been used in a number of village houses.

Open Apr-Sept 10-6; Mar & Oct 10-5; Nov-Feb 10-4. Admission adult £5/child £2.50.
