Bicton Park

Spanning three centuries of horticultural history, Bicton Park Gardens are set in the picturesque Otter Valley. The 63-acre park oldest ornamental area is the Italian Garden, created in the axial style of Versailles in ca 1735. By that time formal designs were becoming unfashionable and the garden was located out of view of the manor house. Today however the full grandeur of the Italian Garden can be seen from the Orangery Restaurant. Bicton’s high-domed Palm House, one of the world’s most beautiful garden buildings, was the first of many developments between 1820 and 1850. Others included an important collection of conifers in the Pinetum and St Mary’s Church, where Queen Victoria, among others, worshipped. A large museum reflects changes in agriculture and rural life generally over the past 200 years. The Grade I Listed gardens, open all year, also feature a narrow gauge railway which meanders through the garden on its 1.5mile track. Gift shop, garden centre, childrens in-and outdoor play areas.
