Battle Abbey
Near the Abbey is the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings and an audio tour shows visitors the exact spot where Harold is said to have fallen. William the Conqueror built the abbey after his victory. It is now largely ruined although the gatehouse and monks’ dormitories survive. Buckley’s Museum is in the fine market town of Battle and nearby are one of the south of England’s largest vineyards: the Carr Taylor.
Open daily 1 Apr-30 Sept 10-6. Winter 10-4. Admission adult £6.70/child £3.40/concession £5.70.
