Impressive 12th century fortress, which was rebuilt in the 16th century and has a walkway linking nine of the 13 towers. Interactive commentary is available charting the castle’s history down the ages. It has been an Elizabethan prison, a poor house and a school. Also on the premises is the Lanman Trust Museum of local history.

Open 1 Apr-30 June & 1 Sep-1 Nov daily 10-5; 1 July-31 Aug daily 10-6; 2 Nov-31 Mar Thurs-Mon 10-4. Admission adult £5.70/child £2.90/concessions £4.80/family £13.80.
