A winding lane leads from Auchencairn to this enchanting hotel, which has views over Balcary Bay to Hestan island and the Solway Firth. The hotel stands in three acres of its own grounds on a safe beach, where the waves gently lap, the birds call and the dolphins occasionally leap. Its cuisine has an excellent local reputation, specialities including Galloway beef, Balcary Bay salmon and West Coast scallops. At lunchtime the conservatory offers a lighter alternative. Bedrooms are airy, spacious and quiet and overlook either the bay or the quiet land-side garden. The area is rich in shoreline and forest walks, five golf courses are nearby as are several National Trust houses and gardens. This relatively undiscovered area of southwest Scotland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and remains mild all year round.
