The Cowal peninsula is one of Scotland’s hidden treasures. It has picturesque freshwater lochs, stunning sea lochs, glorious views over the Firth of Clyde to Ayrshire and to distant Ben Lomond. Dunoon is the Western gateway to Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Close to Dunoon is Scotland’s most magnificient Benmore Botanic Garden and a delightful small hotel called Abbots Brae. This ‘house on the hill’ was built by a Glasgow glass merchant. Fine trees were planted around the house but the view was left unimpaired. Bedrooms are individually decorated with great style and comfort and most have wonderful views. Bathrooms are modern with a Victorian touch. All rooms are named after local villages and a guest folder relates the history of each place, encouraging guests to leave their ‘rooms with a view’ for a bit of local exploring.
