Hotels in Surrey - Crown Inn
Crown Inn. Did it kill him? Sickly King Edward VI, son of the robust Henry VIII, stayed the night here in 1550. At least he did not drown in the duck pond. Today The Crown bristles with awards: Five AA stars, one of just 11 inns across the UK to be awarded such an accolade, shortlisted by The Publican for Freehouse of the Year Award. The Guardian’s Sally Shalam called it ‘a sure bet for a winter weekend’, yet it is only one hour from London with Ramster Gardens and the Sussex Border Path nearby.

The Grasshopper Inn dates back to the 13th century. On the A25, formerly the North Downs Way Drovers’ Road, it was made up of two small cottages, one of which was called ‘The Plough’. One side of the room served Westerham Strong Farmers Ale from the barrel, and the other side Westerham Mild Ale. Customers thumped on the table to get the landlady’s attention from the back room. Today’s customers can still have a thumping good time on Friday nights, dancing the night away to a lively discotheque accompaniment.

Hotels in Dorset - Bridge House
Bridge House, a magical 700-yr old Dorset country hotel on a bridge, lies deep in Thomas Hardy’s Wessex. It was home to Angel Clare’s father, who was vicar of the village, referred to as Emminster in Tess of the D’Urbervilles. It’s also where Tess walked 15 miles to from Flintcoombe-Ash on a frosty winter Sunday, desperately seeking support after Angel had left her.
