Dating from 1598, Gravetye Manor is one of the finest country houses in the UK. Peter Herbert arrived here in 1958. Captivated by the house and its William Robinson designed garden, he injected his own exceptional hotel keeping and restaurant experience into this rural spot. Time has enabled projects such as the restoration of the kitchen garden to come to fruition and miraculously the 1000-acre oasis of forest in which Gravetye sits has resisted encroachment, ‘ though only 30 miles from Hyde Park Corner’. The new owners continue to promote the philosophy of country house hospitality as well as maintaining and nurturing the historically important gardens. There are only 18 bedrooms, each elegantly furnished but with all modern comforts. Public rooms are cosy and restful. The intimate oak panelled restaurant has AA for cuisine and a wine list of over 600 bins – one of the finest cellars in the UK. One of the most celebrated country house hotels in the South-East.
