Hotels in Yorkshire
So rich in history, North Yorkshire boasts some of the country’s most splendid scenery. The North Yorks Moors National Park has 500 square miles of hills, dales, forests and open moorland, neatly edged by a spectacular coastline. Walking, cycling and pony trekking are ideal ways to savour the scenery; alternatively take the steam train from Pickering to Grosmont on the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Numerous greystone towns and villages dotted throughout the Moors are ideal bases from which to explore the countryside. From Helmsley, visit the ruins of Reivaulx Abbey, founded by Cistercian
monks in the 12th century. In Hutton-le-Hole, moorland life is depicted in the Ryedale Folk Museum. Likewise the Beck Isle Museum in Pickering provides an insight into the life of a country market town. A few miles down the road, you’ll find Malton, once a Roman fortress, and nearby Castle Howard, the setting for Brideshead Revisited. From the Moors, cross the A1 for a total change of scene. Wherever you go in The Dales, you’ll come across visible reminders of the rich and changing past. In medieval
days, solid fortresses like Richmond and Middleham were built to protect the area from marauding Scots.
Knaresborough, the home of the prophetess Mother Shipton, Ripley and Skipton all had their massive strongholds while Bolton Castle in Wensleydale once imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. The pattern of history is also enshrined in the great abbeys, like Jervaulx Abbey, near Masham, where the monks first made Wensleydale cheese, Eastby Abbey on the banks of the river Swale, and themajestic ruins of Fountains Abbey in the grounds of Studley Royal.
Bordering South West Yorkshire is the Peak District National Park where a stay in one of our hotels in the Peak District can provide the perfect base for you to explore this wonderful region.
