Hotels in Wiltshire

Wiltshire – some would say the first proper countryside West of London. Wiltshire’s climate and proximity to the coast was even attractive to early man and evidence of this long occupation – Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Avebury, Silbury, Old Sarum and many more makes Wiltshire the supreme county for exploring prehistoric remains.

Some of England’s greatest historic houses are in this county – Longleat, Wilton, Lacock, Corsham and Stourhead to name a few, all have wonderful treasures on view.

The historic city of Salisbury is renowned for its soaring cathedral spire of 404 feet, the highest in England. To the north west, beyond Salisbury Plain, are numerous fascinating little towns, which flourished from the wool and corn trade, including Malmesbury with its Norman abbey and Bradford-upon-Avon, where the river flows beneath the ancient bridge with its strange lock-up.

Wiltshire has many charming villages but two are outstanding: Castle Combe nestling in its South Cotswold valley and Lacock, which has been used in film sets to depict an unspoiled English village of the Middle Ages.
