This area starts north of Woodbridge and goes up to Lowestoft and the Norfolk border. It represents a popular holiday area, with beaches and inlets for yachtsmen and has some of the finest Inns and Hotels in Suffolk.
Ivy House is on the Oulton Broad, near Somerleyton House and Gardens, one of the only Hotels in Suffolk to be on a Norfolk Broad. Inland on the river Waveney in Beccles is the Waveney Hotel. Coming down the coast we reach Southwold, a popular Victorian resort with the fine Swan Hotel, owned by next door Adnams Brewery.
A little south and inland is the excellent Crown at Westleton which has just added a further eight bedrooms. In the same ownership is the 2-star Ship Inn at Dunwich, near the well known Minsmere Bird Reserve and near Sizewell B Power Station. Further inland is the recently converted and now under new ownership Satis House at Yoxford. Some of the best known Hotels in Suffolk are in Thorpeness and Aldeburgh, further down the coast.
The Wentworth in Aldeburgh has been in the same family for some 40 years whereas The Brudenell at the southern end of the town has undergone considerable refurbishment. The White Lion in the centre of town has crooked floors but a good restaurant, specializing is seafood. Thorpeness has the Thorpeness Golf & Country Club,
next to its own 18-hole championship course and near the Mere lake and the famous ‘House in the Sky’.
Whilst staying at these Hotels in Suffolk, you can visit Framlingham Castle, well preserved since the 12th century, and Helmingham Hall Gardens, next to a fine moated Elizabethan mansion.
