This area starts at Eye on the A140 and extends westwards to Newmarket and south-westwards towards Lavenham. At Eye is the Cornwallis Hotel with a wealth of exposed beams and wood carvings, and approached up a long avenue of elms. It includes Bury St Edmunds, which has some of the best known Hotels in Suffolk.
The Angel, opposite the Abbey is owned by Bob Gough, proprietor also of the Salthouse Harbour in Ipswich (see above). It has a fine cellar
restaurant and refurbished bedrooms.
The Priory Hotel, in the north of the town, is popular with those looking for a business Hotel in Suffolk. East of the city on the A14 is Ravenwood Hall (in the same ownership as The Black Lion – see above), which specialises in weddings and has a swimming pool. South-west of Bury on the Haverhill road are two of the most intriguing Hotels in Suffolk, at Horringer.
One is Clarice House, a Spa with rooms, and the other is Ickworth Hotel & Apartments, formerly the seat of the Marquess of Bristol and now a child friendly hotel, offering many sporting activities. Northwest of Bury St Edmunds is another famous Hotel in Suffolk – Tuddenham Mill, a converted mill with the original millstream running below the floorboards. Lavenham has the oldest Hotel in Suffolk in The Swan, dating back to 1425 and with many crooked floors and ex posed beams. It has the fine Gallery Restaurant.
Another gastronomic small Hotel in Suffolk is the Great House in the Market Place, Lavenham, which has just five bedrooms.
In the west of the county at Newmarket is a well known racing Hotel in Suffolk – The Bedford Arms. This was originally a shooting lodge for the Duke of Bedford but is now a modern hotel with pool, spa and wedding and conference facilities.
