Craggy mountains, steep valleys and jewel-like lakes make up the Snowdonia National Park, whose chief attraction is Mount Snowdon itself, at 3560 ft the highest mountain in England & Wales. On a clear day there are views up to Cumbria’s Lake District and across the Irish Sea to the Wicklow Mountains. This wild landscape is traversed by winding mountain roads and narrow gauge railways, but it also has tranquil villages, castles built by Edward I to control the Welsh and mines whence slate, copper and gold used to be extracted.

At Betwys-Y-Coed the River Conwy meets its three tributaries flowing from the west and the beauty of the area is enhanced by cascading waterfalls, river pools and ancient bridges. The Snowdonia National Park Visitor Centre gives a great insight into the background of the area. Nearby Capel Curig is home to Plas-y-Brenin, the national centre for mountain activities which provides climbing, ski-ing and orienteering facilities. The Sygun Copper Mine is situated just outside the village of Beddgelert.

From the village of Llanberis, at the foot of Snowdon, you can take a train to the summit. Nearby are the attractions of Dolbadarn Castle, the Welsh Slate Museum, Padarn Country Park and the Museum of the North, which includes a trip into the Dinorwic Hydro-Electric Power Station, Europe’s largest.
The castles of Caernarfon, Harlech, Beaumaris and Conwy, built in the 13 th century by Edward I are still well preserved. The investiture of the Prince of Wales was held at Caernarfon.

The Ffestiniog Railway is a scenic way to ascend from the coast at Porthmadog (near the fantasy village of Portmeirion, created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in the 1920s) to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog.

At the southern end of Snowdonia lies Cadair Idris, Wales’ second highest mountain at 2928 ft. Lake Bala is the largest natural lake in Wales, 4.5 miles long and only habitat of the rare trout-like fish the gwyniaid.
