One of England’s most beautiful counties with meadows, wooded hillsides and half-timbered villages. The Wrekin and Stretton Hills were born out of volcanoes and this Border Country saw much fighting in the Middle Ages between English and Welsh forces.
Shrewsbury was a fortress town and the castle still has its original gateway of 1083. The Military Museum re-opened in 1995. Ironbridge, near Telford, was the seat of the Industrial Revolution and boasts the first bridge of iron, built across the Severn 1777-79; also the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, Coalport China Museum and Jackfield Tile Museum.
Further south, Ludlow has a fine 11th century castle and has recently become something of a gastronomic centre, with many fine restaurants. Nearby is the 1750-ft high Clee Hill, with panoramic views over Gloucestershire and the West Midlands.
