Hotels in Oxfordshire
Oxfordshire is a varied county, bordering the Cotswolds to the north-west and the Thames Valley in the south-east. Henley in the south-east is famous for its July regatta.
Centre of the county is the City of Oxford, with its ancient university of dreaming spires, echoing quads and cloistered lawns. The first colleges were founded in the 13th century and the most recent in the late 20th. Major attractions include the Ashmolean Museum, Britain’s oldest, opened in 1683. The Bodleian Library (founded 1598) receives a copy of every book published in Britain. Christ Church was founded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525 and is England’s smallest cathedral.
Outside the city Blenheim Palace, built in 1704 for the first Duke of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, should not be missed. Waddesdon Manor is a French-style chateau built for the Rothschild family in 1875. Broughton Castle, near Banbury, dates from 1300 and is still inhabited. Rousham Park and Farnborough Hall are other historic houses in the county. Shotover Country Park is home to rare birds and deer.
