The New Forest consists of 145 square miles of woodland, heath and glade where ponies, deer and cattle still wander freely. It is England’s oldest forest and officially the ponies are the property of Her Majesty the Queen. Visitors can still enjoy trails on horseback throughout this medieval forest, taking in a variety of wildlife, unparalleled in England.
Not to be missed are Broadlands, now home to the Mountbatten family, Furzey Gardens with its exotic trees, Exbury Gardens, a paradise for rhododendron lovers, Bolderwood Grounds arboretum and deer sanctuary and Avon Heath Country Park.
Lymington, at the southern edge of the New Forest, is a popular haunt for the yachting fraternity of the South Coast. A superb day out can be had at National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, home of Lord Montague. A short drive away is Bucklers Hard, a picturesque ship-building hamlet where an interesting exhibition tells its tale. Nearby Paultons Park is a unique blend of gardens, bird collection, museum and entertainment complex, complete with its own maze. This area of Hampshire has a wealth of working farms and wildlife museums open to the public including Londwon Dairy Farm and the New Forest Butterfly Farm.
