The magnificent churches at Fairford, Cirencester and Chipping Campden were built with the patronage of rich wool merchants, which brought the area its prosperity. Some of Britain’s most celebrated gardens are in this county: Kiftsgate and Hidcote to name but two. Cheltenham is the Centre for the Cotswolds and hosts a respected annual Literary Festival as well as a Music Festival. It is also the setting for the National Hunt Gold Cup race every March. Its stately colonnades and Regency terraces bring back the aura of a less hurried age.
County town Gloucester (Roman Glevum) has a wealth of historic buildings dominated by the impressive Norman cathedral. The docks, set along the river Severn, and for so long the key to Gloucester’s prosperity, have been redeveloped as a tourist attraction, with restaurants, an antique centre and museum. Cirencester was also a Roman town, Corinium and nearby is the Roman villa at Chedworth.
Between the Severn and the Wye is the Forest of Dean, one of Britain’s most ancient, whose story is told in the Dean Heritage Museum. Clearwell Caves in the forest were dug out by ancient Britons in their search for iron ore.
