Devon is England’s most visited county, largely due to improved road, rail and air connections. Plymouth, its largest city, is a happy blend of holiday resort, historic centre and modern city. The famous Hoe has its associations with Francis Drake and the Barbican with the Pilgrim Fathers. Exeter is the cultural capital of the county, with its university, theatre, medieval cathedral and Maritime Museum. The Quay House Interpretation Centre tells the story of the city from Roman times (there are remnants of Roman walls) until the present day. 19th-century dramatist Richard Ford wrote “This Exeter is quite a capital, abounding in all that London has, except the fog and smoke.”
Inland are the two magnificent National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Dartmoor, in the South, has 365 square miles of great natural beauty and rugged grandeur with wild heather moorland and deep wooded valleys. From the sparkling streams of the lowlands to the starker granite tors of the ‘high moor’, new pleasures unfold. The wild heather moorland and deep, wooded valleys are the home of red deer and the legendary Doones of RD Blackmore’s novel. Exmoor, in the North, famous for its ponies, is a great place for walking or relaxation in one of its sleepy villages. The North Coast has the resorts of Ilfracombe, Woolacaombe and Bideford, whereas the South has little inlets, harbours and fjords and is known as The English Riviera.Torquay is the ‘capital’ of this area and has palm trees and a Mediterranean atmosphere.
