Aberdeen, known as ‘The Granite City’, boomed with the discovery of North Sea Oil and is still prosperous with bustling docks and port. To its north lie shifting dunes and wide stretches of golden sands. To its west the famous Don and Dee valleys, popular with salmon and trout fishermen and peppered with castles and baronial mansions, many surrounded by magnificent gardens and guided walks. Balmoral is the best known but Craigevar, Drum and Crathes Castles are better fortified. Further West lies Braemar, site of annual summer games and the foothills of the Cairngorms. Elsewhere pine forests open out onto the wild Grampian Hills, thick with heather, where stone circles and Pictish carvings take the traveller back to ancient times.
Our Aberdeenshire hotels along the Dee valley are perfect centres from which to explore this rich heritage. |
