The Cavendish

There has been an Inn here for so long that it is uncertain when it was built. Originally the Peacock Inn owned by the Duke of Rutland, it became the property of the Duke of Devonshire (and still is) in 1830. Becoming the Cavendish in the early 1970's it has been operated since 1975 by Eric Marsh, latterly with Philip Joseph under contract on behalf of Chatsworth Estates.

A closely knit team is dedicated to looking after guests as individuals, not merely room numbers. The hotel exudes a quiet elegance, with extensive artworks and antiques and regular refurbishment work. Add to this the glorious views over Chatsworth Estate and the result is that elusive element - tranquillity.

Hotel reviews

November 2011 : I stayed here one night and loved it. It is very close to Chatsworth and had my itinerary allowed, I would have loved to spend more time here and walk over to the house. It is a nice area and beautifully maintained. They leave a teddy bear on your bed that you can adopt.

November 2011 : If you want to spend a weekend at Chatsworth House and surrounds, this is perfect. We chose a two-night ‘romance’ package, which included two nights, breakfast both mornings, dinner in the fine dining restaurant one night and dinner in the brasserie on the other. The room was large and comfortable. Ten-minute walk across the estate to Chatsworth House.

December 2011 : My wife and I stayed here in a standard room on one of the winter break special offers, shortly before Christmas, taking in the excellent Chatsworth House Christmas festival. The hotel is run with close attention to detail and great charm by the proprietor who has been there since the mid-70s. Everywhere there is the sensation of visiting a comfortable country house.
