The Castle Hotel
The Hunter family, of Pen y Dyffryn fame, bought the Castle Hotel last year and Henry and Rebecca are welcoming guests with the same warmth as the hotel has extended since the eighteenth century.
The hotel's position is unique - at the top of a hill in the small border market town of Bishops Castle, known for its art galleries, craft shops and Three Tuns Brewery. The view from the hotel's vine covered terrace sweeps over the Clun Forest and Hills. It was constructed in 1719 from the ruins of the old Bishop's Castle and it is rumoured that Clive of India was one of the first tenants. Dining is either on the terrace, in one of the busy bars or in the more formal oak panelled restaurant.
Starter might be ham hock & parsley terrine with black pudding, followed by a prime Shropshire steak or pork belly with apple sauce. Leave room for a sticky toffee pudding or home made treacle tart with caramel syrup! The eight individually styled bedrooms overlook either the town or the hills beyond.
A great spot for a break, with Offa's Dyke and Powis Castle nearby and Shrewsbury and Ludlow within easy reach.

December 2011 : My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful couple of nights in the Castle. Great food, good selection of ales, friendly staff. Our room was well presented, clean and spacious and we had a great night’s sleep. The breakfast was lovely – I would recommend ‘The Full Shropshire’. We will certainly be returning in the summer.

December 2011 : My partner and I stayed here just prior to Christmas and I have to say it is a lovely hotel in fabulous surroundings. The breakfast was fantastic and the evening meals were almost as good. My only criticism would be that the menu did not offer a great choice, especially as we stayed three nights.
