Pen-y-Dyffryn Country Hotel
Built in 1845 for an eccentric Celtic scholar, Pen-y-Dyffryn stands in five acres of its own south-facing grounds overlooking stunning hillside scenery on the Shropshire / Welsh border.
The ambience is very much ‘country house’ with stylish décor and fine antique furniture, set in idyllic surroundings. Some bedrooms in the main hotel have double spa baths and are priced according to size and view.
Those in The Coach House have a Mediterranean style, each with private patio; well suited to dog owners. There is no better way to round off exploring Offa’s Dyke or walking in the surrounding countryside (the hotel can supply free walking leaflets) than to dine in the AA rosette restaurant, where the emphasis is on local and organic produce wherever possible. Non-residents come from far and wide for this dining experience.
You can come here simply for total peace and quiet or spend an active few days exploring the area. The National Trust properties of Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham and Erddig are all nearby, as is Wales’ highest waterfall nearby .

June 2011 : A good stay in the summer. My room was on the first floor, modern and well appointed. Important things were pointed out to me on arrival. Nice walks nearby but mostly on roads, unfortunately. Dinner was good and individually prepared. However, if you are by yourself, terribly slow. I did not get upstairs ‘til 1030, having come down at 8. Fine if you are celebrating a special occasion, but otherwise……

July 2011 : Excellent food…quality local produce used in the kitchen to great effect and well presented. Service a little slow but maybe that was because everything was freshly prepared. Room was clean, spacious and well prepared. Staff were friendly and efficient.

January 2012 : My husband and I stayed at Pen-Y-Dyffryn for two nights with our dog. Our criteria is a good standard hotel with great food which also accepts pets – this can be quite a challenge to find, but we came up trumps with this hotel. We enjoyed our stay very much, the staff are very friendly and welcoming.

December 2011 : Pen Y Dyffryn is a lovely square stone built house of comfortable size, overlooking a delightful quiet green valley. You enter and the sweet smell of the log fire beckons you to an armchair. There are papers to read and a tray of tea ands scones arrives with a smile from the friendly receptionist….
