Winteringham Fields Restaurant with Rooms
Tucked under the Humber Bridge in North Lincolnshire, but definitely ‘deserving a detour’ according to Michelin who have awarded this cosy Restaurant with Rooms four crossed knives and forks (like The Waterside Inn at Bray or Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley), sits Winteringham Fields.
Owned by Colin and Bex McGurran, the hotel has extra rooms in the Dovecotes just up the road. Food remains at the centre of the Winteringham experience, dinner choice being between the 7-course Menu Surprise or the 3-course a la carte, with a good value three or four course menu available at lunchtime.
Local produce features strongly, with fresh fish delivered daily from Grimsby, game in season from local shoots and vegetables and herbs from Winteringhams’s own gardens, plus fresh fruit from around the world.
The older part of the hotel is cottagey and homely in décor, the newer rooms having a mix of antique furniture, rich drapes and super bathrooms. Bex has compiled a list of short walks, ranging from the Kissing Gate Walk to the 4-mile Along the River Bank, sure to get up a good appetite for the culinary treat that lies ahead.

Hotel reviews
June 2011 : We stayed in one of the Dovecotes suites along the road – draped luxury with a door out into the garden and a fabulous, vast bathroom. The owners recommended a fine walk along the river before we settled down to the dining experience. Most people come here for a ‘special occasion’ and go for the 7-course menu. We were happy with the 3-course a la carte menu, which is more affordable. Good service. Slightly Bohemian cottagey public rooms but charming new owners and professional staff all round.

June 2010 : This ‘Restaurant with Rooms’ is amazing. We arrived late, but the staff were very helpful and did everything to make us feel welcome and very comfortable. I only wish we could have stayed longer. Fantastic!

February 2011 : A hotel in a little world and courtyard of its own. Loved my bathroom – roll top bath with enormous shower head with the quirky addition of a large, stone carved owl standing on the polished stone floor. Sumptuous bed tho’ the room wasn’t huge.
