The Swan at Hay Hotel

Some five years ago the charming Mackintosh family took over the Swan: parents Charles and Kathryn with Harry in the kitchen and Amy front of house. What a transformation!

The bistro bar has scrubbed tables, chairs and wall panelling with Parisian lithographs reproduced on the walls. An excellent range of snacks are available here, with ales from the cask. Harry trained in France and dinner or Sunday lunch can be taken in the more formal Georgian Restaurant overlooking the gardens. Main courses include chicken chasseur and porc boulangere, as well as classic Herefordshire beef.

Bedrooms are traditional in style and have every modern convenience. Georgian elegance and beautiful gardens make the Swan a popular wedding venue. They also cater for small and medium sized business meetings. Set on the glorious river Wye, Hay retains the charm of a late Georgian / early Victorian market town with boutique style shops and galleries and of course hosts the famous book festival in May / June. With the unrivalled scenery of the March counties all around, the Swan is the ideal centre for a short break.

Hotel reviews

June 2010 : We stayed in June and it was a pleasant experience. After a walk along the Wye (well signposted), we decided to eat in the bar area, where there are lots of locals, rather than in the more formal restaurant. A late amaretto ice cream was my undoing! The room was fine and quiet (when it stopped spinning). Staff seemed a bit stretched. The next morning we browsed in the local bookshops and came away with some bargains.

September 2010 : A very pleasant atmosphere with helpful, friendly staff, very clean bedrooms and comfortable sitting room, enabling one to relax in a peaceful setting.
