Blackaddie Country House Hotel

Recently awarded AA  rosettes for the quality of the food from the AA this superb small hotel set in its own gardens on the banks of the river Nith, one of Scotland’s great yet little known salmon rivers and with extensive views across Scotland’s Southern Upland Way, Blackaddie stands within two acres of secluded gardens in the village of Sanquhar.

There are nine comfortable bedrooms, all of which overlook aspects of the gardens or the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway. There are also three self-contained cottages in the grounds, each with fully fitted kitchen, for those who wish to be independent.

Cuisine is far and away above what one would expect to find in a small hotel. Chef / Proprietor Ian has held a Michelin listing for many years in previous restaurants and his menus use fresh local produce with all dishes prepared on the premises. Both fine dining or bar suppers can be served, with children's menu available. There is also a private dining room.

Sanquar's Post Office, opened in 1763, is reputed to be the oldest in Britain. Caerlaverock Castle (and Wetland Centre) and Threave Castle are nearby, as well as the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries. There is much to do and see in this unspoiled corner of Scotland.

AA 2 rosettes, AA***, Visit Scotland ***, Silver Award for Food from Eat Scotland, Gold Plate Hotel Review, ***** Exceptional Food Review, Winner Dinner Quality Award from Scottish Hotel Awards 2009.

Hotel reviews

December 2011 : This is my favourite restaurant outside the big cities. Blackaddie uses local produce so you won't see a huge menu, just four options for each course depending on what's available. Chef Ian McAndrew is a genius and if this hotel was in a busier place, there would be a lot more shouting about it. It's not cheap but it's worth it if you love food. If you're in the area, give it a go - you won't be sorry. Stay in the hotel if you can because you won't want to leave afterwards!
September 2011 : We dined in the restaurant on a quiet Tuesday night and were delighted with the whole experience. As we were alone in the restaurant (several other guest dined in the bar area) we had the full attention of the front of house staff who were great and the food was exceptional. I even found a fine Edinburgh ale that I'd never heard of before.
