Craigdarroch House Hotel

Craigdarroch House sits on the South (really East) side of Loch Ness in unspoiled countryside near the village of Foyers. It borders one of the last great wildernesses of the Highlands, with the Monadhliath mountains to the East and no roads or villages for 25 miles! This is Lovat country with several fresh hill lochs like Loch Mhor, Loch Knockie and Loch Ruthven nearby. It lies just off Colonel Wade’s lochside road, by which he travelled from Fort William to Culloden in 1745 to meet up with the Duke of Cumberland and finally extinguish the Stuart cause. Nearby is the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre and it is said that Nessie appears more readily to hotel guests who have sampled some of the 100 malt whiskies on offer! The hotel has just eight bedrooms, most overlooking Loch Ness and the wood panelling, high ceilings and open fires in the public rooms give the building the comfortable feel of a Highland Lodge.

Bedrooms have flat screen TVs and WIFI is available throughout. Martin and Elinor and their young family will look after you – Martin is the chef and Elinor front-of-house.

There is a daily changing set dinner menu making use of local produce where possible. This might start with terrine of smoked ham hock, followed by venison with braised red cabbage and, to finish, sticky toffee pudding.

Craigdarroch is next to the Falls of Foyers and there are golf courses nearby, as well as boating, fishing and shooting, together with castles and battlefields to visit. The perfect spot for a ‘Break with Tradition’ with plenty to do and see in the area.

Hotel reviews

December 2011 : We booked a long weekend stay here and loved it. The atmosphere is tranquil and the views wonderful. Our bedroom had the view of the loch which was great to see when you get up in the morning. Food was delicious and hubby had a nice nap after dinner in front of the fire after a few drams and a day out on the hill!! You can do that as it is nice and relaxed.
October 2011 : We had a great two night stay here. Five course menu was fantastic, although as several others have mentioned, a touch on the pricey side and with no options. After dinner a fire was lit for us in the beautifully decorated drawing room and we had coffee whilst drowsing on the comfortable sofas. Our room was the four poster with picture book views, and extremely comfortable bed and very well furnished. Service and breakfast were great and other than the lack of choice around dinner, we couldn't fault it. So do go.
October 2011 : Just stayed the night at Craigdarroch. The location is superb with a very nice view overlooking the loch. The rooms were clean and nice. We had dinner in the hotel. The roast venison was excellent as well as the service outstanding. After dinner we had a nice drink by the warm fire in the study. Breakfast the next morning was simple but good. I highly recommend the hike to see the waterfall behind the hotel.
