Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel
Lovelady Shield. The name conjures up an image of the peace and tranquillity that you will certainly find in this gracious country house hotel. Set beside a river in a wooded valley high in the Pennines, just 2 1/4 miles from Alston (England's highest market town), this quiet retreat is an ideal situation for exploring the border country, the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and the Yorkshire Dales. Only 35 minutes from the Penrith exit of the M6, via the dramatic A686 - one of the world's top drives - it is a very pleasant stopover.
The owners, Mr & Mrs Haynes, together with their friendly staff, are maintaining the hotel's tradition of warm hospitality and service.
The rooms in the extension have every comfort and amenity: DVD/CD players, power showers in the bathrooms and squishy duvets.
Chef Barrie Garton produces imaginative and beautifully presented meals and has been awarded AA for his cooking. Service in the pretty dining room is discreet and attentive. The hotel is well furnished and welcoming, with log fires. There are two self-catering cottages in the grounds. A very peaceful spot.

Hotel reviews
September 2011 : I have stayed at this hotel three times and due to stay again this week. The staff are very friendly and they make sure you have a great stay. The rooms are clean and very warm and cosy so you have a great nights sleep. The food is great and very different, and I can’t wait to eat the good food again. Keep up the good work Lovelady Shield and see you very soon.
13/12/2011 : We arrived on a bitterly cold December evening and were greeted warmly. The position of the hotel well away from any noise meant we had an excellent night's sleep. Breakfast was lovely and every request was met with a smile. On Saturday evening we dined in the hotel restaurant and again the service and food were superb. This is fine dining at its best.
13/12/2011 : Stayed lots of times at Lovelady Shield and it’s fair to say we have never been disappointed. The rooms are comfortable with huge beds, the staff are friendly and efficient and the food…. Do try and stay a Sunday night and get the Gourmet 7-course dinner. Not large portions but exquisitely prepared. Breakfast equally good. No newspaper but home made muesli and great scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.
