The Brown Horse Inn

This traditional Lakeland Inn with rooms located in the idyllic and tranquil Winster Valley only a short distance from Bowness and Lake Windermere, offers a selection of individually designed rooms rated from superior to luxury.

They have all been sympathetically refurbished to the highest standard, retaining the historical character of the old inn with every modern comfort. Some have views of the hamlet of Winster, others have vistas over the valley, a peaceful nights rest is assured in all rooms.

The cosy and rustic restaurant serves only the finest produce, sourced from local suppliers or from the Brown Horse estate in Winster itself. A sophisticated and traditional menu with continental touches is offered, featuring the best the Lake District has to offer, using, wherever possible, vegetables from the inn's own gardens.

The bar, with open beams and a log fire, offers a fine selection of bottled beers, an excellent wine list and a selection of local hand pulled ales as well as featuring ales produced in the Brown Horse's own onsite micro brewery, The Winster Valley, brought to life by proprietors Steve and Karen Edmundson. The Brown Horse also offers a selection of five luxury self-catering cottages close to the inn.

Hotel reviews

12/12/2011 : Recently visited the Brown Horse. What a great find, lovely warm welcome, staff were lovely, room was clean, spacious and lovely view. We ate on both evenings. Food was excellent, very busy bar & restaurant, which made a good atmosphere. They have their own micro brewery which was an added bonus, we brought some back with us. Would definitely go back.
28/11/2011 : Just got back from spending a fantastic weekend at the Brown Horse. Our room was large and clean with a lovely bathroom, the bed was really comfortable. We ate evening meals and breakfast in the restaurant both were well presented and enjoyable. Warm and friendly with attentive staff. We would have no hesitation in recommending to friends or family.
16/11/2011 : Just got back from a three night stay at the Brown Horse with my girlfriend. We felt we got a very good deal and weren't expecting a lot, but to our pleasant surprise it was brilliant. The rooms are as you would expect at a B+B, quite large, clean and comfortable with a good shower. However the real value at the Brown Horse is in the dining room! We would recomend the Brown Horse to anyone and hope to return next year.
