The Pheasant

The Pheasant is a charming family owned and run coaching inn with well kept gardens and 60 acres of grounds and woodlands. It is situated close to Bassenthwaite Lake at the unspoiled and tranquil Northern end of the Lake District. Originally a 16th century farmhouse it was converted in 1778 to a Cumbrian Hostelry and still retains its unique period atmosphere. One of the 19th century regulars was the huntsman John Peel.

The bedrooms are of understated luxury, each with individual character and every modern comfort and amenity. Tastefully decorated, they combine soft colours and textures with antiques and personal touches.

The new AA  rosette award winning restaurant overlooks the garden, forest and fells beyond. It uses only the finest seasonal ingredients sourced locally wherever possible. It has a carefully selected wine list from quality conscious growers - a gourmet's delight.

The Bistro caters for lighter and less formal dining with dishes to suit all occasions and tastes

The Bar is totally unique with its mellow polished walls and oak settles. The character is testament to a traditional hostelry and provides an experience not to be missed. Guests have free unlimited use of a nearby luxury spa.

Hotel reviews

10/11/2011 : In the middle of nowhere this is a tremendous find. Cosy and friendly with lovely food, wine and beer. There are areas for the public and for hotel guests and all very well serviced.
08/11/2011 : Our B&B recommended The Pheasant Inn and we loved it. Warm, friendly, with great food in substantial quantities. Steak and ale pie was superb. A wonderful retreat on a damp day...the roaring fire just added to the welcoming atmosphere.
03/11/2011 : A very lovely, old fashioned coaching hunting lodge, which makes you feel like donning your jacket and galloping off after a fox or two. Nothing bad to say about this except the prices....do not come here with ambitions of saving money. At nearly five pounds for a cheap pint of lager, it is not to be sniffed at....however, their drinks selection is awesome with some whiskeys (whiskys) you never even knew existed. Rooms are perfect and staff are more than capable.... Quality at a premium price....Just go for it.
