Stonefield Castle Hotel
Stonefield Castle stands on the Mull of Kintyre, near the pretty fishing village of Tarbert. It commands sweeping views over Loch Fyne towards Bute and Arran. It is set within 60 acres of woodland gardens, which are known for some of the finest rhododendrons in Britain, azaleas and other exotic shrubs which flourish in the mild West Coast climate.
The Castle is an example of Scottish baronial architecture. Built in 1837, it was once the home of the Campbell family and retains many original period features - large public rooms with wood panelling and high ceilings.
A new AA restaurant overlooks the Loch. Chef makes use of the finest local Scottish produce, with locally sourced beef and fish a speciality. After dinner, guests can relax, maybe with a wee dram, in front of a roaring log fire.
In Tarbert harbour you can watch the fishing boats come and go and maybe catch a glimpse of a pod of dolphins. There are prehistoric ruins and chapels on the Mull of Kintyre, the whirlpool of Correyvreckan, many local walks and hikes where wildlife can be spotted. There are gardens at Kilmory and ferries leave from nearby small ports for Islay, Colonsay, Jura, Gigha and Arran.
