ABOUT THE CAVENDISH

There has been an Inn here for so long that it is uncertain when it was built. Originally the Peacock Inn owned by the Duke of Rutland, it became the property of the Duke of Devonshire (and still is) in 1830. Becoming the Cavendish in the early 1970's it has been operated since 1975 by Eric Marsh, latterly with Philip Joseph under contract on behalf of Chatsworth Estates.

A closely knit team is dedicated to looking after guests as individuals, not merely room numbers. The hotel exudes a quiet elegance, with extensive artworks and antiques and regular refurbishment work. Add to this the glorious views over Chatsworth Estate and the result is that elusive element - tranquility.

  • Rooms: 24
  • Facilities nearby include exclusive fishing on Wye & Derwent rivers on Chatsworth Estate
  • The Cavendish is open all year

16/10/2009 (3 night stay): Lovely hotel overlooking beautiful countryside. A good place to relax and unwind for a few days. The staff are attentive and the manager makes a point of welcoming all new guests personally, which is a nice touch.

12/08/2009 (4 night stay): I have been staying at the Cavendish for 35 years, it's still the best hotel in the UK, not to mention the wonderful countryside of the Derbyshire Peak District.
