Built in 1845 for an eccentric Celtic scholar, Pen-y-Dyffryn stands in five acres of its own south-facing grounds overlooking stunning hillside scenery on the Shropshire / Welsh border. The ambience is very much ‘country house’ with stylish décor and fine antique furniture, set in idyllic surroundings. Some bedrooms in the main hotel have jacuzzis and are priced according to size and view. Those in the coach-house have a Mediterranean style, each with private patio; well suited to dog owners. There is no better way to round off exploring Offa’s Dyke or walking in the surrounding countryside (the hotel can supply free walking leaflets) than to dine in the AA restaurant, where the emphasis is on local and organic produce wherever possible. The National Trust properties of Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham and Erddig are all nearby, as is Wales’ highest waterfall.
